From Syracuse Snow to Mickey Mouse: Navigating the First Flight and Disney Magic

Welcome back to the Gray Hair & Daycare blog! If you’ve been following the journey of older dads Frank Cerio and Carlo Russo, you know that life with a baby is a constant learning curve. In the first half of episode 34, Frank recounts a whirlwind few weeks that took his family from the lake-effect snow of Central New York to the high seas of a Disney cruise.

The Reality of Gen X Parenting

Frank and Carlo kicked things off by reflecting on how much parenting has changed since they were kids in the Gen X era. Frank shared a story about finding out on the last day of second grade—from his teacher, not his parents—that he was being moved to a different school across the highway.

Today, raising kids involves dozens of meetings and school tours for every minor transition. While the world is different now, Frank’s lifelong friend Chris reached out to offer some encouraging parent advice: even if Frank had become a dad decades ago, he would have "stepped up" and done a great job. Still, Frank admits he feels better prepared for fatherhood with a little more "gray hair" and wisdom on his side.

Crash Test Daddy: The First Flight

One of the biggest hurdles for any parent is the first time flying with a baby. To prepare for their big cruise, Frank and his wife Kelly did a "dress rehearsal" trip to Orlando.

• The Air Pressure Trick: Kelly timed Josie’s feedings for takeoff and landing to help with ear popping, a pro-level fatherhood tip that led to a successful, tear-free flight.

• The Gear Struggle: Frank learned that being a dad on vacation means becoming a pack mule. Between the giant suitcases, the stroller bag, and a 16-pound baby, the trek through the Orlando airport was an exhausting workout.

• The "Magic Kingdom" Sun: Coming from cloudy Syracuse, baby Josie was baffled by the Florida sun. Frank joked that she looked at the sky as if to ask, "What planet have you brought me to?".

Holidays and High Seas

Back home, the family navigated a very "Syracuse" Thanksgiving, which included a blizzard and a live Christmas tree that Frank eventually had to prop up with a brick because his dog, Watson, kept melting the supporting snow.

Then, it was time for the main event: a Disney cruise with the godparents. Frank shared some touching moments that define the dad life:

• The Grand Entrance: On Disney cruises, the crew announces each family as they board. Frank had the godparents record the moment Josie was officially introduced to the ship’s atrium, complete with a round of applause.

• Christmas in the Caribbean: Despite the tropical setting, the ship was fully decked out with a 20-foot tree and characters in holiday outfits.

• New Milestones: At 10 months old, Josie started waving and clapping for the crew members, proving she was "having a ball" despite her young age.

Laughter is the Best Baby Advice

At the end of the day, parenting comedy is what keeps us sane. Frank reminded listeners to "be present" and enjoy these moments, even when they are exhausting, because they will eventually be looked back on as the happiest times of life.
